A parallel spectral element method for industrial applications: dynamics of tcds collimator in the lhc

Proceedings Of The 4th Joint Seminar On Industrial And Applied Mathematics, Volume 1, Number 1 - 2005
In this work we present a spectral element based method for computational mechanics applications. The method and the family of computer codes ELSE developed from it has been applied to several industrial applications. Here it is used to simulate the structural dynamics of the TCDS collimator in the LHC particle accelerator at CERN; for which, in the event of an asynchronous firing of extraction kicker magnets, the proton beam energy is deposited in the solid obstacle causing a thermal shock and stress waves propagation. The transient response of the structure is calculated by solving the coupled heat transfer and structural deformation problem.
