Seismic while drilling: look ahead and look around capabilities
Rapport de recherche 04/28, CRS4, Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia, Number 04/28 - december 2003
In the framework of the Seismic While Drilling project this report covers the preliminary analyses that were run to setup a numerical tool adopted for the elastic wave propagation simulations. The ELSE code, developed at CRS4, is based on the Spectral Element Method, designed to efficiently simulate the elastic wave propagation in the elastic media. This tool has been equipped with several basic wave sources that will be used to reproduce the behaviour of the real sources used on the field.
Then the code has been used to analyse the wave propagation in a simplified model, giving affordable numerical data sets to tune the imaging procedure, and giving the first suggestions on the optimal configuration of a source receiver pair. Four sources have been tested: isotropic pressure and shear wave sources with forces directed along the pipe and normal to its line.
