Cfd simulation of ge10 combustor and variants

This report is devoted to the numerical 3D simulation of the combustion for the geometry and operating condition of the Nuovo Pignone combustor DLN Single gas K-one. All simulation are run with the StarCD CFD code on the CRS4 IBM SP parallel computer, which consists of an RS/6000 SP with a single "high" node of 16 processors of type POWER3. First, we present the modelling feature used and precise their range of validity. Then, we present the results of the simulation of 3 different geometries: 1) the combustion chamber as it is currently operated (one quarter) 2) a double-swirler pilot assembly (complete) 3) the combustion chamber(one quarter) modified to account for the insertion of the double-swirler pilot together with the head of this new pilot. The first simulation gives very soon a 2D profile but the flame length is greatly increased (about 50%) in confront with the 2D simulation, sign of a strong sensibility of the flame profile to the local equivalence ratio. The second simulation is rather complex and its aim was to obtain realistic boundary conditions for the last simulation. This last simulation, investigating the effect of the double-swirler pilot, does not show strong variation of the total length flame but quite complex 3D structures.
