FASTEF “chicane” optimization with a larger pump pipe diameter

Rapport de recherche , CRS4 - december 2010
The aim of this calculation report is to present a design variant of the FASTEF “chicane”. The CFD simulations leading to and supporting the variant have been performed with starccmV5.06 [1] The simulation domain encompass the terminal part of the LBE flow in the Heat eXchanger (HX) the plenum connecting to the pump propeller, the pump tube and a numerical exit region. By chicane, we intend the flow pass between the plenum and the pump tube. The objective is to deliver the most homogeneous flow to the pump propeller. The constraints are the usual about 2m/s limitation of flow velocity for erosion issues and to keep the pressure loss as low as possible. Due to the symmetries of the physical domain, only one quarter had to be modelled. We describe the variant of the design and how it performs from the hydro-dynamic point of view.
