Since the very beginning of the Pre-construction phase
(2010-2012) of the European Spallation Source program,
a Helium gas-cooled target was proposed, capable of
sustaining the beam power of 5 MW. This avoids cladding
of tungsten blocks necessary to mitigate corrosion in
water-cooled systems. The concept of a stationary
granular target filled with tungsten spheres of about
10mm diameter and inspired by previous studies
proposed for neutrino factories, was first considered. The
extension of this concept to a rotating target filled with
tungsten rods represents a viable option for the ESS
target. The neutronics performance, heat removal, ease of
licensing, maintainability and cost are the most relevant
criteria to be considered for target selection.
