Abstract. A short presentation of combustion activities at the Sustainable Combustion Processes Laboratory of ENEA will be provided, covering experimental and numerical aspects. Emphasis will be given to combustion dynamics in gas turbines, related to the current scenario that shows interest in burning hydrogen-blends and in increasing the share of renewable sources of energy. In relation to the fuel-flexibility issue in gas turbines, results from a LES numerical simulation of a non-premixed syngas/air turbulent flame will be presented. Focus will be posed on the anchoring mechanisms, and in particular on hydrogen and heat preferential diffusion effects. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bio. Eugenio Giacomazzi (Aeronautic Engineer, Ph.D. Sustainable Combustion Processes Laboratory ENEA, Casaccia Research Center – Rome), born in Rome on 17 April 1970, graduates in Aeronautic Engineer at the University of Rome ``La Sapienza'' (Dept. of Mechanics and Aeronautics, DMA) in 1996, his Master Thesis ``Turbulent Combustion Modeling for Diffusive and Premixed Regime'' being awarded in the ``Italian ESSO Award'' competition. In 2000 he takes his Ph.D. at DMA in ``Theoretical and Applied Mechanics'' and his thesys ``Modelling and Simulation of Turbulent Combustion'' is also awarded in the ``Italian ESSO Award''. Then, he has several fellowships with DMA and with the Italian Agency for Energy and Environment (ENEA), where he obtaines permanent position in 2006. During these years he participates to several national and international projects in combustion and space propulsion systems; he teaches classes about turbulence and combustion modelling at the AeroSpace Engineering School of Rome; he is tutor for many graduate and Ph.D. students. His expertice covers CFD, parallel computing, experimental diagnostics, control strategies, and theoretical aspects connected with turbulence and combustion. Applications ranges from ground-based energy systems to aerospace propulsion systems.
