In this lecture, presented at the PASCAL Summer School, the pathway towards the validation of the CFD simulation of sloshing phenomena induced by seismic events is shown. The PASCAL project is focused on providing evidence for augmented resilience to severe accidents of the HLM systems ALFRED and MYRRHA. The Summer School aimed to encourage knowledge transfer between experts and students/young researchers regarding the technological challenges of the HLM systems. Our task in the project is to qualify the CFD for the simulation of seismic induced sloshing effects of the primary coolant in GEN-IV systems. The CFD validation was supported by experimental campaigns using the SHAKESPEARE platform from VKI. A partially filled vertical cylinder was employed in the first experimental tests and numerical simulations under horizontal harmonic forcing. Then, a mock-up inspired by the current design of ALFRED was built and operated in water. The validity of the numerical model was ascertained by comparison with the experimental results performed on artificial harmonic forcing. Finally, the CFD model was run with existing seismic loads from real significant earthquakes.
